Saturday 18th May – Bike ***** Two Rivers – Deben to the Orwell - sunny and warm:)

After yesterday’s top adventure when we helped Mark Swain take a 45’ yacht from Levington Marina to Fox’s boatyard in Ipswich where it was taken out of the water for a small repair. Despite the poor weather cloudy and cool with light rain at times it was great fun and both Mag and I had a go on the helm:) Highlight being when we passed under the huge Orwell Bridge!
So, when the good weather returned today, light winds, sunny and warm it was too good an opportunity not to take advantage of. So, after breakfast it was time to get the bikes out again with the original plan being to head over to Falkenham Church. We started off going down to the prom which was fairly busy with people enjoying the sunshine. Being Saturday there was several open water swimmers in the sea! We soon bumped into Damon, who we childminded from when he was a baby until he was 15. He is now in his mid-twenties with an amazing selection of colourful tattoos! We stopped for a great catch – up and were pleased to hear he is on the verge of being in a position to buy his first house:) Continuing along the prom past Mags favourite tourist train (she hates it!) to the Fludgers before turning inland on the road to The Dip. Back on the prom but much quieter up this end we pass the golf course, a couple of Martello towers to Felixstowe Ferry. It’s always nice here to watch the world go by, families crabbing on the jetty as the ferry comes in. A quick spin around the boatyard with the tide very high and still coming in! Onto the river path, past the houseboats, actually floating this time turning away from the River Deben at Kingsfleet. We decide against Falkenham Church and continue towards Kirton before turning left using country lanes and footpaths with cow parsley being particularly pleasing on the eye. Reaching the busy A 14 Mag turns left along Cherry Blossum Lane, The Grove and home (10 mile circuit) while I head towards Trimley, Felixstowe Docks finishing at the viewing point at Felixstowe Docks by the River Orwell (16 mile circuit) It’s then just a case of three miles home through Landguard Nature reserve, and along the prom. So, another top bike ride lasting 2 hrs 35 mins covering the 16 miles. Home in time for a salad lunch and a relaxing afternoon in the garden:)
